Violin 79 is now complete. The combination of exceptional wood, and further developments in ground and varnish have resulted in a superb fiddle. It is currently for sale.
The wood in the back is Bosnian maple that has a close grain and a deep figure evenly spread across the whole piece. I bought it in 2004, and was told it was about two years old then. I have six other pieces from the same tree. The front is fine grained Alpine spruce from Austria.
For those interested in varnish, it is coloured a deep and transparent red, with madder pigment made in the workshop from madder root in the traditional way. The varnish itself is an oil varnish made with amber and colophony. The appearance is close to Old Italian finishes.
