Violin maker's blog

This is the back of my new violin, and shows the back archings. As usual the violin is a Guarneri del Gesu model. The violin is not a copy of any specific instrument, but made in his later style. The wood is particularly beautiful with a deep and broad figure, and fine grain structure; in other words classic violin wood. The sides and scroll are from the same wood.

I have several more pieces from the same log stored. The wood dates from 2005.

The edges will be finished and purfled when the body is finally assembled. This is almost certainly the method employed by the Old Italian Masters. It makes for all the little idiosyncrasies in the outline that are so pleasing to the eye in old instruments.
