My new violin had another coat of varnish today. I use an oil varnish made with amber and colphony that I make myself. One of my teachers said "any violin maker worth his salt, makes his own varnish." I rather tend to agree. I also make my own pigments, from madder root.

This is the front for the new 16" viola. The beautiful hazel markings in this front wood are clearly visible. I have done the initial arching with gouges and planes as usual, and used scrapers to smooth the surface. The edges are still rough, and will be finished when the body of the viola is assembled. At least 5 or 6 further scrapings will be needed to achieve the final surface and archings.
