This violin, finished in 2010, is based on the "Sainton" Guaneri del Gesu. The original is now thought to be from 1743, rather than the older attribution to 1741. It was the subject of an article in the Strad magazine recently, discussing authenticity.
This new violin has a two piece back, whose figure is beautifully shown up by the varnishing. For varnish afficianados, the varnish is made from 50% amber, 25% colophony, and 25% mastic, cooked in oil. It is apllied with brush.
The violin is currently available.
The colouring is Madder lake pigment, made in the workshop. Madder lake is a very old pigment, and was almost certainly used on many Cremonese instruments.

It was nice to see old and new friends and clients at Manchester in January. We had a very successful few days.
