Deeply Figured Poplar Back Beautiful Sides
Back Detail
Head and scroll in Maple
This new cello is a late Stradivari model of 1726. The original instrument has a willow back. This new instrument has a back of Poplar which has a very beautiful deep and broad figure; the sides are also poplar with their own distinct figure. The wood was cut in 2007. This type of Poplar is very similar to willow in density, structure and other characteristics, and like willow was used by the old Italian makers, especially for cellos. The front is from Alpine Spruce of very even grain. The purfling on the cello is made from the batch shown being made in the previous blog. The cello should be with its new owner soon.
I have one more piece of this exceptional and rare Poplar to make another similar cello.
