This is the back of the " Baron Heath" Guarneri del Gesu 1743. The varnish wear pattern is very clear, and the outer red varnish appears more opaque or transparent depending on the viewing angle. It is a deep red and almost certainly coloured with madder lake.
The back arching is very beautifully done.
This week I will be finishing the body of the new viola prior to purfling.
